Simple Prosodic Peak Estimation under Segmental Perturbations

چکیده

Despite the apparent simplicity, measuring the position of f0 peaks can produce unexpected results. In any model of intonation where the fundamental frequency is derived from both an intonation component and a segmental component (e.g. consonantal perturbations or the intrinsic f0 shifts of vowels), the measured peak position does not equal the peak of the intonation component. The difference can sometimes be unexpectedly large. Indeed, measured peak positions can falsely imply a phonological distinction in the intonation where none really exists. A modified measurement technique is presented that is less sensitive to segmental effects than directly measuring the f0 maximum. It is tested mathematically in a superposition model of intonation and also on speech data.

Prosodic peak estimation under segmental perturbations.

Despite the apparent simplicity, measuring the position of peaks in speech fundamental frequency (f(0)) can produce unexpected results in a model where f(0) is the superposition of a supersegmental component and a segmental component. In these models, the measured f(0) peak position can be as much as an entire syllable different from the peak of the intonation component. This difference can be ...

Tonal alignment patterns in Spanish

Two speakers of Mexican Spanish read a total of 810 declarative sentences containing nine distinct target syllables with an H* accent , under dif ferent prosodic conditions (end of intonational phrase , end of intermediate phrase , and phrase-medial position) , systematically changing syllabic position in the word and distance in syllables to the next stressed syllable . The data demonstrate th...

Phonetic normalization using z-score in segmental prosody estimation for corpus-based TTS system

Recently, corpus-based text-to-speech (CB-TTS) has been actively studied through the world. Statistical training methods are generally applied for prosodic rules in CB-TTS, and classification and regression tree (CART) is one of the mostly used methods. In this paper, we present an efficient CART training approach of zscore based phonetic normalization. The idea of ours comes from the fact that...

Modeling segmental duration in German text-to-speech synthesis

This paper reports on the construction of a model for segmental duration in German. The model predicts the durations of speech sounds in various textual, prosodic, and segmental contexts. It has been implemented in the German version of the Bell Labs text-tospeech system [18, 12]. The construction of the duration system was made efficient by the use of an interactive statistical analysis packag...

Timing Relationships between Prosodic and Segmental Control in Osaka Japanese Word Accent

This paper examines onset times of prosodic and segmental transitions with corresponding sternohyoid muscle activity in the speech of Osaka Japanese. The synchronization between prosodic and segmental control occurs in words combining a close vowel followed, directly or indirectly, by an open vowel with High-Low accent, including words with devoiced accented vowels. Both segmental and prosodic ...
